Threats

The life of the birds and their habitats are under pressure by humans day-in and day-out.  The birds and their eggs are hunted by villagers to sell on the black market.  A pair of tropical birds can sell for 50.000 CFA (100 USD) and are sent to zoo’s and pet stores.  During the raining season the villagers plant thier gardens on the shore of the lake where the birds make their nests.  This competition continues during the dry season when birds and humans move their activities to the areas with abundant water.  Migratory birds are also used in many traditional religious ceremonies (voodoo).
