The Heart of the Protected Forest of Lama : A natural reserve

An unforgettable adventure in the midst of the forest by the Office National du Bios

The Forêt de Lama( or Forêt de K) is located 100 km north of Cotonou.  In 1946, when it was first classified as a protected forest, it contained 16,250 ha of land of which 11,000 was dense forest. Fifty years later only 1,900 ha of the forest remains.  At the heart of what remains, of which is completely protected, is called the central core.  The devastating effects deforestation, caused by the Holli (Agricultural migrants from the north who came to the forest in the 1950’s) the Fon and Aïzo have been stopped.  However unfortunate this damage, the Forest of Lama makes up a natural reserve protecting the biological diversity, flora and fauna of the region.
